First Time in College

A student who has never been admitted to a degree program at Howard University or any other post-secondary institution of higher education is considered a First Time in College (FTIC) student. We consider the applicant's secondary school academic record, standardized college entrance exams (SAT or ACT), leadership in school and community activities, unique talents and skills, and educational objectives. For admission consideration, an applicant should have a well-balanced college preparatory program that includes the following recommended course work:

  • 4 years English

  • 3 years mathematics

  • 2 years social science

  • 2 years science (w/ lab)

  • 2 years foreign language

First Time in College applicants have the opportunity to submit an application for Early Action or Traditional Decision. Early Action allows high achieving students the opportunity to receive their admission decision early in the admissions process. Early Action acceptance decisions are provided to students in December. Scholarships are also awarded at this time for all accepted Early Action applicants that meet the specific requirements.

FTIC Applicants must complete and submit the following credentials for admission consideration:

  • Application for Admission (Common Application ONLY).

  • Non-refundable $45 application fee (Personal checks are not accepted). If paying the application fee may cause you and your family to face unusual financial hardship, we will accept the NACAC fee waiver. Please ensure your counselor submits the required Common Application fee waiver affirmation, and the NACAC Fee Waiver Request Form via the Common Application.

  • Official high school transcript. 

  • Official test score results from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT)

  • SAT school code – 5297 

  • ACT school code - 0674

Please note: The writing section is not required for either exam. October is the last test date that will be considered for early action/spring applicants. December is the last test date that will be considered for regular decision applicants. Scores submitted after these test dates will not be considered.

  • One letter of recommendation from a high school counselor

  • One letter of recommendation from a high school teacher

Domestic students must also submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal financial assistance. Please see the Cost of Attendance page for more information.

Transfer Student

Each year, we welcome hundreds of talented transfer students from institutions throughout the nation and the world.  Admission criteria vary among Howard University's schools and colleges. As a transfer applicant, you must meet the following minimum requirements for admission consideration:

  • Earned 15 transferrable credit hours (30 credit hours for the School of Business) from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution.

  • Earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA (3.0 GPA for the School of Business) and received a passing grade of C or better in both a college-level English and college-level math course (C or better in Applied Calculus or Calculus I for the School of Business).

  • Additional credentials such as a high school transcript and SAT scores may be requested for admission.

Applicants must complete and submit the following:

  • Application for Admission (Common Application ONLY). Common App reports (College Report, Mid Year Report, and Final Report) are not required. 

  • Non-refundable $45.00 application fee. (Personal checks are not accepted).

  • One official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended.

  • One letter of recommendation from a professor or an academic advisor.

Former Student Returning

A student who was pursuing a degree at Howard University, who has not been registered at the University for the previous semester, and who wishes to return to the same school/college, department, and degree program. In general, Former Students Returning are readmitted to the last school in which they were enrolled at Howard University. Applicants must submit an official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended since last enrolled at Howard to the Office of Admission. Credit will be awarded for those courses taken that are comparable to courses offered at Howard University in which the student has earned a grade of C or better. Students seeking readmission have up to 30 days before the start of the semester to submit their Undergraduate Returning Student Application.​

Before readmission is granted, students who are absent from the University for the following reasons must fulfill the corresponding requirements:

  • Withdrawn for health reasons - Clearance from the University Student Health Center must be obtained, correspondence should be directed to the Administrator, University Student Health Center, 2139 Georgia Ave NW, 2nd Floor, Howard University, Washington, D.C. 20059. Proof of clearance should be provided to the Office of Admission.

  • Suspended or dropped for poor scholarship - Such persons must appeal in writing to the dean of the college or school from which they were dismissed; and must have been out of school for at least one semester after having been suspended. Approval from the school/college must be received in the Office of the Registrar before readmission can be granted. Students should also remain aware of their Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status as it relates to receiving Financial Aid. A separate appeal process is required for students who are not meeting SAP.

  • Disciplinary suspension and/or withdrawal - Readmission may be sought for any period following expiration of the suspension period. Approval must be received from the Dean of Special Student Services in the Office of Admission before readmission can be granted. 

Visiting Student

A student who is currently enrolled in a degree seeking program at a different institution who wishes to enroll at Howard for one academic year or less.

Applicants must complete and submit the following:

  • Application for Admission (Howard University Online Application).

  • Non-refundable $45 application fee .

  • An official transcript with at least a 2.50 GPA.

  • An official letter of permission from the student’s home school.

    • The letter should include the student’s GPA and a list of courses the student is authorized to take at Howard. Applications will not be processed until such letter is received.

Unclassified Student

A non-matriculating student who wishes to complete courses during the Spring or Fall semester. Typically students who require completion of prerequisite courses to begin a specific course of study are considered unclassified.

Applicants must complete and submit the following:

  • Application for Admission (Howard University Online Application).

  • Non-refundable $45 application fee .

  • One official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended.

  • Personal Statement.

Summer Student-At-Large

A non-matriculating student who is applying to attend the summer semester only. 

Applicants must complete and submit the following:

  • Application for Admission (Howard University Online Application).

  • Non-refundable $45 application fee .

  • One official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended.

  • Personal Statement.
